VICTORIA AND ABDUL

PG-13

Academy Award Winner Dame Judi Dench is absolutely amazing as Queen Victoria. If she is not nominated for an academy award it will be a travesty. If you will remember, this is not the first time she played Queen Victoria. She played Queen Victoria in “Mrs. Brown” twenty years ago.

Based on a true story-mostly, “Victoria and Abdul” is about Queen Victoria striking up an unlikely friendship with a young Indian clerk named Abdul Karim.

Besides Dench, Ali Fazel is Abdul. He is handsome and engaging. Adeel Akhtar is Abdul’s sidekick Mohammed. Aktar steals the showwith his acerbic comments that are so funny. Eddie Izzard is Bertie, the Prince of Wales. Michael Gabon is Lord Salisbury. Many will recognize Gabon as Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series.

The screenplay was written by Lee Hall based on the book of the same name by Shrabani Basu. The screenplay was really well-written. Hall has done an exceptional job of presenting historical facts in a way the captures the audience’s attention and keeps it throughout the film.

“Victoria and Abdul” was directed by two-time Academy Award nominee Stephen Frears.

The cinematography was gorgeous. I loved the sets and the costumes.

Not only should Dench be nominated, the movie should be, too. This is a must see film. This is one of my top five films of the year.
