What a waste of talent! “Suicide Squad” is the same rehash we have seen all year from DC and Marvel: the good guys save the world from alien beings, again, and again and again. Only in this rendition the good guys ain’t so good and neither are the characters that are supposed to be the good guys.

A secret government agency run by Amanda Waller, named A.R.G.U.S creates a task force comprising super villains, the “Suicide Squad”. They are assigned to execute dangerous tasks in exchange for shorter prison sentences.

“Suicide Squad” has one of the most talented casts you can imagine. First, two tiem Academy Award nominee, Viola Davis plays Amanda Waller. Academy Award nominee Will Smith is Deadshot. Academy Award winner Jared Leto is the Joker. Margot Robbie is Harley Quinn and has most of the funny lines in the movie. Academy Award winner Common has a cameo role as Monster T. Academy Award winner Ben Affleck also has a cameo role as Bruce Wayne. Adewale-Akinnuoye Agbaje is Croc man. Joel Kinnaman is Rick Flag who is supposed to be a good guy but his acting is so stiff that he just comes off as a jerk most of the time. Cara Deleringer is Flag’s love interest June Moone and the Enchantress. Even a fabulous cast like this cannot make a bad story good.

The biggest problem with this movie is a tired, worn-out storyline with no imagination. We have seen this movie before with a different cast of actors and a different cast of characters. In “Suicide Squad” a bunch of psychotic killers are supposed to save the world. Right! If you believe that line of bull I have ocean front property in Iowa to sell you!

“Suicide Squad” was written and directed by David Ayer based on the comic book by John Ostrander.

The make-up and special effects are wonderful. Croc man, The Joker, Harley Quinn and Diablo had to spend hours each day just getting in make-up and costumes.

I hated that Ayers glorified murderers and assassins and made them heroes. What is wrong with our society that we think this is all right? And I hate a movie where there is gratuitous violence and this movie is jam packed with it. It should have an R rating instead of a PG-13.

“Suicide Squad” opens today at AMC Showplace Edwardsville 12, AMC Eastgate Showplace 6 and tomorrow at Dougherty Theatres Jerseyville Stadium. Jill: give this 1 Mary
