“Going in Style” is loaded with Academy Award winners and nominees in this remake of the 1979 film that starred George Burns, Art Carney and Lee Strasberg. This version of the film is better. It is more exciting and leaves you laughing. You will fall in love with the three bank robbers and keep hoping they get away with all the cash they can.
Desperate to pay the bills and come through for their loved ones, three lifelong pals risk it all by embarking on a daring bid to knock off the very bank that absconded with their pension funds.
Academy Award Winner Morgan Freeman plays Willie. Academy Award Winner Michael Caine is Joe and Academy Award Winner Alan Arkin is Albert. They are supported by Academy Award Nominee Ann-Margaret as Annie, Academy Award Nominee Matt Dillon as Hamer, the FBI agent who is after them; Joey King is Brooklyn and Christopher Lloyd as Milton.
Lloyd’s character steals every scene he is in and that is not easy considering the great acting talents of this cast. You will recognize Lloyd from the Back to the Future series and “Taxi.”
“Going in Style” was directed by Zach Braff. As a Director, Braff does an excellent job getting the most out of his actors.
The screenplay was written by Academy Award Nominee Theodore Melfi who also wrote “Hidden Figures” that was released earlier this year. This film was based on the 1979 story “Going in Style” by Edward Cannon. Melfi is a great writer. There are lots of funny lines and scenes in this film and he keeps the tension up so you never know what is going to happen next.
The background score for this film was excellent and added to the feeling of the film.
As I watched “Going in Style,” I was afraid that some people watching, who found themselves in the same financial situation might resort to robbing a bank, too. A word of warning to all Senior Citizens…robbing banks is not a good thing to do no matter how financially strapped for cash you are. “Going in Style” is fiction and if you choose to rob a bank, after watching this film, it probably won’t turn out well for you.
Although “Going in Style” opens this weekend at AMC Eastgate Showplace 6, AMC Showplace Edwardsville 12 and Jerseyville Stadium Theatre. Don’t miss this film. It is fun for everyone.
